I’m loving everything about summer fashion trends this year as they’re feminine, colorful, easy to wear and there’s lots of the affordable online stores that have them in stock.
I haven’t covered fashion for a while on the blog or podcast, so I thought I’d distract ourselves with pretty summer 2020 fashion trends!
If you’re looking for some outfit inspiration and to see what’s trending this Summer, I’ve been rounding up the most popular styles and spring/summer 2020 fashion color trends from fashion magazines, the runway, liketoknowit and instagram.
Take them or leave them, fashions about finding what works for you and makes you feel great!

1. Sporty Drawstrings
Don’t think just sweat shorts or gym shorts when you hear sporty drawstrings but flattering and feminine gathered, ruched effects brought on by clever drawstrings – on tops as well as bottoms.
It’s more of a street fashion trend and we’re seeing drawstrings sewn into off the shoulder tops which is great for keeping them in place, under crop tops to pull them into place and more obviously as you’d expect, on bottoms.
2. Side cutouts
I remember when this trend started with monokini’s. Side cutouts are more unexpected than backless styles and classier than cropped.
Whether big or small cutouts, on dresses, tops or swimsuits, this is a subtly sexy, easy to pull off look.
If you want to downplay this look and take it from day to night, just throw a blazer over the top during the day.
3. Sheer Overlays
This one can take a little coordinating. The concept is simple; put an outfit on, then wear a sheer dress over it, but the effect is actually quite chic. Especially in beige or monochromatic colors or a cute floral print styled over bike shorts.
Sheer overlay style tip
You can also take the easy approach to sheers like I did with one that’s part of the piece already. This red polka dot romper with a sheer overlay is from Femme Luxe but it’s sold out so I linked the photo to another one that’s similar and in stock.
4. Bra tops and bralettes
Bralettes under blazers were one of the biggest trends to hit the spring/summer 2020 runways. I keep seeing these super cute bra, short and blazer coord combos and I have ab and confidence envy.
I hope you’re all braver than me, as personally I haven’t worked off the quarantine fluff enough yet to wear this look again since December, although I love it and it’s super cute.
The photo below was taken at the start of vacation in Chile. The bra tops on sale now for $7.50 on ASOS.
Bras and bralette’s are now acceptable as tops (ok, well maybe not in a corporate office), especially when they coordinate.
Wear a bra top, matching bottoms and throw your blazer over top. Extra points if that matches too. Think more tailored or glamorous than slouchy or sporty. It brings a whole new meaning to 3 piece suit.
5. Denim jumpsuit
One of the more wearable fashion trends 2020. It doesn’t really matter the style; flared or straight leg, button down or zip, as long as it’s denim. I love how low maintenance this look is as I’m not a fan of ironing.
6. Halter tops
This is one of my favorite summer fashion styles of tops as they show off the shoulders and are super flattering. Add a touch of bronzer for a golden sun-kissed glow.
For added sex appeal go for a low back or plunging neckline. Silky materials always feel more lux but a cotton lycra bodysuit and drawstring or tailored shorts makes for a good casual day look.
One of the big resort wear 2020 trends if you can actually get away! Linen always reminds me of Summer in Europe or the Caribbean and mainly of mens fashion.
Now women are stealing the look to stay cool in the summer heat with linen pieces. From lightweight bottoms to one-and-done dresses. Just be prepared to iron!
8. Split prints
What does that even mean? It’s one of the fashion trends that’s easier to show than explain! A split prints is half in one print and half of another.
It sounds weird but it’s actually cute when done right. I think it looks best done with the same print but reversed color each side, or on top and bottom: e.g. polka dots, checks or if you’re feeling brave a floral print.
9. Summer Fashion | Baby doll minidresses
If you’re looking for new dresses for summer 2020 the baby doll is one of the most popular. I remember wearing these in the 90’s! They’re not making their way back into my wardrobe as they make me look pregnant as I have boobs (which I didn’t in the 90’s).
But if they’re for you, look for pastel summer hues for the most on trend look and with variations in volume to find the most flattering for you. I wish I could pull them off as they are so playful, light and breezy. I think they’d make a really cute summer bbq outfit or day drinking outfit.
Pro tip! Wear bike shorts underneath if it’s windy!
10. Ankle bracelets
If you’re on a budget, accessories are an easy way to update your look for Summer. Each ankle bracelet has a totally different vibe; gold seems more luxe, shells are more beachy, material versions feel boho and more relaxed and pearls are a classic. I’ve been eyeing these 2 from Boutique Minimaliste and patiently waiting for either to come back in stock!
Ettika also has several great options but tend to run big. Use code summersave for 20% off.
11. Puff sleeves
I saved my favorite summer fashion trend for last in this summer fashion blog: Puff sleeves! Dresses, tops, if it’s got a puff sleeve I’ll wear it. The bigger the better.
This ’80s-inspired silhouette has been around since last year, but designers are still incorporating the design into their new collections.
Puff sleeves or mutton leg sleeves are an easy-to-wear detail that makes any look more current, structured and on trend. Some of the best summer tops for 2020 have been crisp white tops.
Let’s talk color! Trending colors for Summer Fashion 2020
Pink and orange combos are super fun, colorful and give off major happy vibes which we could all do with more of right now. I cant pull this color combo off but for those who can, it’s stunning!
Buttery yellow is also on trend and like a ray of sunshine. Whether it’s worn head to toe or just a pop of color: think shoes, bags, or a gorgeous silk head scarf with messy waves. I never thought I’d wear yellow as normally it washes me out but I just ordered a yellow puff sleeve summer dress from SHEIN, so we’ll see. I’ll add a pic here if it’s any good (updated June 30th 2020).
Neon! Not for those afraid to stand out, it’s time to rock your neon! Wear your brightest brights and feel vibrant and fresh. I love neon pink maxis or rompers or just a splash of color with a cross body bag.
