Try these 10 Super Easy Skin Boosters for healthy glowing skin year round
How to get clear skin is one of the most asked questions on google about skin care. These easy, clear skin tips are all easy tips you can start immediately. No gimmicks or magic potions, just simple tips for brighter skin.
Top 10 Clear Skin Tips
1. Drink Up!
Detoxing your body and skin by hydrating from the inside out is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get clear skin. You all know you should be drinking at least 8 glasses (2 liters) of water a day but how many of you are? The bonus is not only will it aid in flushing out any toxins but also ensure skin is hydrated, which helps with a more youthful and glowing complexion.
2. Don’t Forget to Wear SPF Year Round!
I’ve always worn a moisturizer and/or foundation that has an SPF of 15-30 but that really won’t cut it as you need to keep reapplying throughout the day for it to be effective. Since moving to the desert, I’ve upped my SPF to SPF50 which I apply after my moisturizer and before my foundation.
During the day, you’re going to want to keep topping it up for it to be effective but no one wants a gunky build up as that won’t help to get clear skin. There are a couple of options to avoid this and to keep your skin protected.
You can use an SPF30 powder that you can keep lightly dusting on every 2-3 hours. Tarte SEA Set & Protect Mineral Powder Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is cruelty-free and vegan. This SPF powder goes on easily over makeup and is easy to reapply throughout the day. It’s a wonder product that should always be in your purse!
The other option is an SPF setting spray you can keep reapplying on bare skin or over makeup throughout the day. COOLA makes a good SPF setting spray that’s really refreshing, SPF 18 and organic.
Often the skin gets overlooked but it’s your body’s largest organ, so keep it protected and cared for and it will thank you. Not only by looking healthy, glowing, hydrated and unburnt but also protecting it from future signs of aging and skin cancer.
Remember, I just said the skin is the bodies largest organ. Well that means it’s also great for eliminating toxins, not just by drinking water and sweating but also exfoliating and dry skin brushing.
To keep pores unclogged and spots and blackheads at bay, you need to gently exfoliate from head to toe. Choose an exfoliator that’s suitable for your skin type; be gentle with your face and be careful not to tug, pull or rub too hard!
Kate Somerville does a really effective, cruely-free exfoliating line which includes a daily face wash: Exfolikate Cleanser and Exfolikate intensive exfoliating treatment which work together to polish skin; revealing a smooth, glowing complexion.
We all know stress is bad for us and can lead to a number of health problems! One being a negative impact on the skin including breakouts, dullness and sensitivity.
Make time for yourself by going to Yoga, for a massage, or taking a long aromatic bath; don’t have time for that? Why not try some simple deep breathing exercises at home. When you create time for your family and friends, and try not let work overrule everything in your life your stress levels decrease. It’s an easy and free way to get clear skin.
5. Clean your makeup brushes!
When was the last time you washed your make-up brushes? I’m so guilty of not doing this often enough, gross I know! You can’t get clear skin by rubbing grime into it. My friends and I always say to each other we’re going to do it, and then we’ll see each other the next week and still not have done it! As soon as I’ve posted this I’m off to wash my brushes and have a make-up free day.
Experts recommend weekly washing for your daily brushes but realistically every 2 weeks for daily brushes and once a month for less-used brushes is more realistic. Some brushes are easier to clean than others so try cleaning at least your lipstick brush and foundation sponge after every use. You don’t have to buy an expensive professional brush cleaner, baby shampoo works great. To make it even easier, use a spray on cleaner that makes the brushes smell girly and fresh.
Cinema Secrets Professional Brush Cleaner $25has a yummy vanilla scent.
6. More Clear Skin Tips – Apply Your Vitamins!
When you think of clear skin tips applying vitamins might not immediately come to mind. Eating them’s one thing, I’m like a kid in candy store at vitamin stores but applying them often gets overlooked.
While a clean, organic diet is awesome; many foods are not as nutritious as they once were due to over farming, etc. We also put demands on our body that need to be met if we’re going to stay well nourished from inside out. Taking daily vitamins has many benefits depending on which ones you take.
You’ve taken your daily vitamins, but have you applied them to your skin for that healthy, glowing complexion? Try to look for a serum or moisturizer that contains vitamins A, C and E which help to fight off external factors like pollutants, smoke and UV damage as well as the signs of aging. You still need to use an SPF as well.
I’m all for streamlining skincare for speed and this primer and serum in one is infused with 14 essential oils, 10 plant oils and 4 skin-rejuvenating vitamins: A,B5, C and E to nourish your skin and prepare it for flawless makeup.
7. For Clear Skin Eat Your Fats!
If you’re reading this, you’re probably already invested in your health and eat pretty well. Highly processed foods can cause dull and problem skin but low fat diets and unbalanced diets lead to problems too.
Make sure you’re eating enough ‘healthy’ fats, not all fats are created equal (especially those man-made, try to stay clear of those). Choose foods high in essential fatty acids and Omega-3’s and don’t be afraid to try ‘Superfoods’ to add some variety to your diet to avoid sagging, dry skin.
It’s easy to add them to whatever you’re already eating by throwing some flax seeds in your smoothies/shakes or on your breakfast. You can also try eating fish such as fresh salmon a few times a week instead of red meat and using olive oil or flax oil mixed with balsamic as a salad dressing. Try this Pecan Crusted Bourbon Glazed Salmon for something new and healthy or just simply baked like the photo below.
8. Pay Attention to Your Makeup & Skincare Ingredients!
Aim to avoid these ingredients in your makeup and skincare for clear skin:
- Silicones: which can dehydrate the skin, clog the pores and contribute to redness, pore scarring, and acne breakouts.
- Petrochemicals: Petroleum derived ingredients are pore clogging and can also produce 1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen and neurotoxin.
- Perfumes and Colorants: these can be irritating and may increase skin sensitivity. Many of the dyes are pore clogging.
Also on the list of ingredients to avoid: parabens, alcohols, phthalates and acrylics.
9. Check Expiration Dates!
Have you checked the expiration date on your cosmetics? Many of us have a drawer full, or bags full of cosmetics that we’ve accumulated but most of these have use-by dates.
Have a make-up clear out, throw out anything out-of-date, if it doesn’t have an expiration date here’s a good guide (from Seventeen):
• Mascara: 2-3 months
• Foundation: 6-12 months
• Lipstick: 2 years
• Lipgloss: 1 year
• Blush, Powder, Eyeshadow: 2 years
• Nail Polish: 1-2 years
• Lotion: 2 years
Make-up, even if it hasn’t gone off will have gathered bacteria over-time which can cause skin reactions, conjunctivitis and other infections!
Once you’re all cleared out you’ll not only feel less cluttered and make everything easier to find, but have room to treat yourself to something new!
10. Give Your Skin a Break for Clear Skin
I love my make-up, and as much as I hate going in public without it, I also love giving my skin a break as often as possible. Another clear skin tip is to never wear make-up to the gym, that’s just asking for clogged pores and breakouts.
Try and go a day or two without makeup or at least wash it off as soon as you get home. Use the break as an opportunity to exfoliate, use a face-mask, moisturize and pamper your skin and then leave the skin sans make-up, allowing it to breathe! It’s that easy.
