What is cellulite?

If you have it, you’re not alone; it affects 90% of women and 10% of men (Scientific American). As women age and estrogen starts decreasing, from as young as 25, you may start seeing the appearance of cellulite.

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite is caused by any number of things. But one of the reason women are more prone to it is that Estrogen has an impact on the blood vessels. So when estrogen decreases, you have decreased circulation, meaning less oxygen and nutrition to those trouble spots.

This, along with a decrease in collagen production and an increase in size of fat cells means they begin protruding through the collagen. This is when they become the visible, bumpy fat we call cellulite aka orange peel skin.

Women also have 2 kinds of adrenergic receptors. One (alpha receptor) which causes fat cells to produce fat and one (beta receptor) that breaks down fat. However, nature can be cruel and for every one beta receptor in the thigh, there are nine alpha receptors!

Why do Women have more cellulite than men?

Women produce more estrogen than men; estrogen makes fat whereas testosterone breaks down fat. It’s so unfair right? Additionally, men have one layer of fat throughout their entire body and a one-to-one alpha and beta receptor ratio.

Why are teenagers getting cellulite?

Too much estrogen makes fat cells larger. So…younger women who are overweight might have a condition called estrogen dominance. Which means they are making too much estrogen and/or are eating foods [such as soy or using containers that leak bisphenol-A] that have estrogen-mimicking ingredients.

What are the different grades of Cellulite

There are 4 grades of cellulite:

0:  no visible cellulite.

1: You can pinch the skin and see a cottage cheese–like texture.

2: Visible cellulite on the legs standing.

3: Visible cellulite when you look in the mirror or lie down. This stage is very hard to treat.

By becoming more active, choosing organic foods, and wearing underwear that doesn’t have elastic across the buttocks that cuts off the circulation. If you have VPL, your underwear’s too tight.

This piece started off very simplistically with the video but after doing more research, I learned a few new things myself. 

Did you ever notice that cellulite is always underneath where the underwear elastics go?

If you draw an invisible line where the cellulite is, you will see where the panty lines are. So if you can’t afford reduction treatments, invest in new underwear. Time to get yourselves some thongs girls if you don’t already or at least underwear that fits.

Will your diet help to reduce cellulite? Absolutely! The problem in the Western World is both quantity and quality. Although we’re wising up, there are still way too many of us that eat not just far too much food but too much of all of the wrong, processed foods. This is then compounded by inactivity and long hours sitting and do nothing.

That’s just a recipe for encouraging orange peel skin whatever size you are. It’s not just eating less fat, or eating less sugar. More importantly, it’s hormone balance along with having to eat nutritiously and having to move.

Is cellulite genetic?

How big a role do genetics play?

There is a genetic component or predisposition to cellulite. But just because you have the genetic component doesn’t mean you have to develop it if you do the right things. Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and skip restrictive underwear.

I haven’t included any ‘miracle’ creams that promise a quick fix as miracle cream has still yet to be discovered!

  1. Eat a healthy diet.
    I’m talking anti-oxidants such as berries, citrus fruits, veggies, and green tea to help defend against free radicals. Replace saturated fats with healthy omega-3 fats e.g. oily fish, flaxseed, fish oils, and nuts to help with blood circulation. 
  2. Drink plenty of water.
  3. Do gentle dry body brushing to improve circulation.
  4. Minimize toxins both the ones you eat and apply.
    To prevent a build-up of toxins in the body. Remove or limit toxins like tobacco, alcohol, coffee, processed foods, high levels of sugar and chemical additives. 
  5. Sweat to help detoxify and encourage circulation
  6. Wear underwear that fits
  7. Exercise
