Opera gloves, long gloves, evening gloves, or whatever you prefer to call them are the most glam and elegant fashion trend for 2022-2023. I’m loving how easily that embellished, tulle or long satin gloves elevate any look and not just gowns. They’re such a style statement and this years styles are prettier than ever. I’m so ready for a monochromatic and glam hot pink and black glove moment. Here’s the ones I’m eyeing just in time for the holiday season and parties. As well as how to style opera gloves to make them less opera (although that’s still ok) and more everyday fashion.

The opera gloves trend
Opera gloves have been worn for centuries (nearly three thousand years) with evening gowns and black tie attire but wearing them with cocktail dresses and for everyday is relatively new. Dua Lipa’s always loved this fashion trend. Whether it’s driving gloves or long gloves and more and more celebs and designers have been embracing this trend.
Designers like IFTA, Valentino, Ellie Saab, Balenciaga, Giambattista Valli all included them in their F/W 2022-2023 fashion shows. There wasn’t just one color or material that dominated. Everything from neutrals at Giambattista Valli to bright colors at Valentino and mismatched white and black opera gloves at Off-White made it down the runways.
What’s the difference between opera gloves and evening gloves
The longest styles are called opera gloves which are elbow-length or longer. Whereas styles that come to just below the elbow are called long gloves or evening gloves but not opera gloves. The most fashionable styles for this seasons gloves trend are opera gloves.
the garment we know as the opera glove seems to have first evolved in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Queen Elizabeth I of England is reported as wearing an 18-inch-long pair of white leather gauntlets, with two inches of gold fringe, at a ceremony at Oxford in 1566.

How to wear opera gloves
The opera gloves trend for FW 2022-2023 means wearing them pretty much with any cocktail dresses. Monochromatic looks like hot pink and black are the most fashion forward ways to wear them.

If you want a change from monochromatic outfits, try colorblocking with bold colors instead.
Leather is also a big winter trend so whether it’s a leather dress and leather or material gloves. The key is to keep it monochromatic, whatever color you go for. It doesn’t matter if they’re more fitted or slouchy for this trend. Basically, if it’s long, it’s in.
For colder months, layer them under a matching 3/4 length sleeve coat or tailored suit. This is one fashion trend I’m going to be fully embracing as my hands are always cold.
Yes, you can still wear them with black tie attire as well. They’ve been seen more than ever on the red carpets this year from Millie Bobby Brown to Blake Lively and Khloe Kardashian.
The opera gloves trending now
Revolve and Anthropologie have some of the prettiest styles around this season. My personal favorite is this long crystal embellished pair. For designer opera gloves, Gucci has a beautiful black lace tulle pair which comes in a few sizes. Dolce & Gabbana also have a long black velvet or leather pair that are more durable than lace and tulle.
For a luxe for less pair, Amazon has lots of affordable styles starting at under $10 and is where I got my long satin gloves from. They even have some fingerless ones which are more convenient for being able to use your phone without having to take them on and off. Although it’s a great excuse for a little break from scrolling and screen time.
When buying a feather trimmed pair just remember most of them are dry clean only. So although the white ones are super pretty, black or pink are a lot more practical.
