I love a classic loafer, especially one with beautiful leather and gold hardware, but I don’t believe you need to spend designer prices to find a pair you’ll actually enjoy wearing. I’ve tried everything from Hermès and Valentino to Sam Edelman, and I’ve recently added a seriously comfortable pair of J.Crew loafers to my collection. For luxe for less, Sam Edelman white leather loafers are another affordable alternative at under $150 if you love Gucci’s classic horsebit aesthetic. People compare the Sam Edelman aesthetic to Gucci loafers a lot, which I can see. They’re great Gucci loafer dupes, so if you’re looking to save, not splurge, they’re a great option.
The backless Sam Edelman style has a similar look, with gold hardware and a choice of colors and materials. However, you can feel the difference, and the Gucci loafers for women are definitely a lot softer and more comfortable. My Sam Edelman pair needed some breaking in, and I found the mule version ran slightly large, so you may want to consider sizing down depending on your foot shape.
I’ve also tried the regular closed-heel Sam Edelman Loraine loafers, which I found ran big. If you’re trying the loafer trend for the first time or want a less expensive everyday pair, they’re worth considering.
Gucci also offers a convertible style where the heel can be worn up or folded down, which I’m really tempted to get in white. They also come in black leather.
Loafer mules: The backless loafers I love for everyday wear
If you’re torn between loafers and mules, loafer mules give you the best of both worlds. They’re essentially backless loafers, combining the polished upper of a traditional loafer with the convenience of a slip-on mule. I particularly like them for traveling, casual lunches and days when I want something smarter than sneakers but don’t feel like wearing heels. They’re also worth trying if you have narrow heels and find that traditional loafers slip off.
For a classic look, I’d choose leather or suede in black, tan, brown or cream. A simple horsebit detail adds a little polish without making the shoe difficult to style. Are chunky and lug-sole loafers still in style?
Classic loafers are the styles I’d invest in, but that doesn’t mean chunky or lug-sole loafers are completely out of fashion. They’re simply a different aesthetic. A slim leather loafer feels more elegant and understated, whereas a lug sole adds a heavier, more casual finish.
If you already own chunky loafers and love wearing them, there’s no reason to stop. I always pay particular attention to whether a shoe rubs at the heel, pinches across the toes or slips when I walk. Leather can soften with wear, but I wouldn’t buy a pair that’s genuinely painful and assume it’ll eventually become comfortable. If you plan to wear your loafers for long days of sightseeing or commuting, it’s worth considering a cushioned insole and a flexible sole as well as the appearance.

A shoe that looks wide isn’t necessarily designed for wide feet, so I’d check the brand’s actual measurements and customer fit information. Avoid sizing up automatically just to accommodate the width. You may end up with a shoe that’s too long and slips at the heel. And remember, even the most beautiful designer loafers aren’t worth wearing if they pinch your toes.

One of my favorite things about loafers is how easily they make a casual outfit look more polished.
