I’d seen the Dyson Airwrap hair tool on YouTube and a friends Instagram and loved the great styles and results I was seeing. As well as how easy it looked to use! I’m a sucker for new beauty tools and products but to save money, I waited until Sephora had their 20% OFF VIB Rouge sale to bite the bullet.

Honestly, I nearly sent the Dyson Airwrap complete styler back a couple of times as I was struggling to get my coarse hair sucked onto the barrel and to get a smooth finish.
I’m glad I stuck with the Dyson though, as I love the volume it creates and how much kinder it is to my hair than my hot curling irons. As it’s not clamping on direct heat but air drying and styling.
It’s not all magic and the Dyson Airwrap’s not without faults. It does have pros and cons which you’ll see in the video.

If it wasn’t for a friend raving about it and telling me it takes practice I would have given up and I’m not a quitter (probably why I still have it). I’ve had the dyson airwrap styler a few years now and there was definitely a learning curve and things I changed. Hopefully this review and Dyson airwrap video tutorial will help you get through quicker and save you some time and stress. Here are the main Dyson airwrap tips I want to pass on for getting the best results for different styles.
NEW Dyson airwrap tips
One of the major changes I’ve made is how wet my hair is when I use it and the attachments I use. Whatever result you’re looking for wait until your hair is completely cool after styling to brush or hand comb through. Here are my updated Dyson airwrap styling instructions:
- For curls use the smaller barrel on damp hair (60% dry)
- For waves use the bigger barrel on damp hair
- For volume and a slight wave use the Dyson airwrap big barrels on 90-100% dry hair.
What attachments does the Dyson airwrap come with? Do they work?
This hair tool comes with quite a few attachments and I’ve tried them all.
The volumizing round barrel brush gives a lot of volume so is great if you have fine, straight hair. However, for those of us with thicker, wavier/curly hair it’s a bit more difficult to get to grips with and can leave your hair frizzy if it has a natural wave. Whichever way you hold the drier it tends to blow the hair up rather than down to keep it sleek.
How to get the best results from your Dyson Airwrap Tips & Tricks
I’ve found the best results from using a lot of tension when I roll the rod up my hair and use tension rather that letting it roll itself up. I hold it for about 15-30 seconds on full heat and full power until the hair’s completely dry, then switch to the cool setting for the last 5-10 seconds, turning it off and releasing.
Dyson Airwrap styling instructions for different types of curls and waves
If you want just a soft bend in the ends with less heat damage blow dry the roots and mid lengths of your hair smooth and then just use the Dyson Airwrap on the mid length to the ends or wherever you want the wave.
For actual curls use the small curling attachments for volume and softer curls and waves (depending on how much you brush it out), use the larger attachment.

- Gives your hair lots of body
- Kinder to your hair than the direct heat from a curling iron/tongs
- Multiple attachments for different styles (although I only use the larger barrel when I have extensions in).
- Various heat settings and air flow settings. Plus a cool shot setting to set your curls and hair style.
Dyson Airwrap Cons

It takes longer using this than styling my hair with my curling iron. I can curl my whole head in about 10 minutes with my regular hot iron.
This tool also drys your hair too, so it probably takes just a little more time than if I was drying and curling it. I use the Dyson hairdryer which has really cut down on my hair drying time and saved the arm ache.

Price: I know $400-500 seems a lot to fork out for the dyson airwrap and hairdryer. It is expensive but I know how good the quality of Dyson is from having the Dyson hairdryer. I even travel with mine as it cuts down my drying time so much.
Time is money so if it takes me 30 minutes less to dry and style my hair, that’s more time in the day that I can be productive with.
I was also fed up of getting my hair tangled in the back of the tiny hairdryers hotels have attached to the walls. My husband ended up having to cut mine out one day where it got tangled so badly in the air vent at the end!

There’s a learning curve to use it properly. So you need some patience or at least to watch this quick video.

Dyson airwrap styling instructions | Can I use it on dry hair?
Yes, you can but it won’t work as well if you want curls. It works great on dry hair if you just want volume or a slight bend. Your hair needs to be 40% dry for it to work best for curling so the heat can dry your hair and set your curls.
I tend to wait for mine to be on the drier side just so it’s quicker to style and uses less heat but if you’re hairs more frizzy or curlier you might want to start with it being more damp.
