Chainmail dresses are putting the hot in hot girl summer, here’s the best of them if you dare to bare
Chainmail dresses and mirror disc dresses are having a major moment with their high shine, high impact effect. It doesn’t get much hotter than these sexy loosely knit dresses that leave little to the imagination. This head turning style is definitely not for shrinking violets and much loved by celebs but if you love glam fashion and a wow factor keep reading. If you’re not sure about the racier more revealing low cut, backless or sheer styles that need careful underwear consideration, there’s lots of more tightly woven chainmail dress options to dip your toes into this trend with. As well as some tips on what to wear under chainmail dresses!

The chainmail dress trend
This trend is nothing new. It’s been recurring on the runways since 2016 and Kendall Jenner wore a silver chainmail mini dress to celebrate her 21st Birthday back in November 2016.
Chainmail dresses are one of ‘the’ fashion trends for 2023 with lots of celebrities including Emily Ratajkowski, Paris Hilton and Amanda Seyfried all choosing to wear them to the 2023 Met Gala.
How to style chainmail dresses
This revealing style is more versatile than you might think with many styles working for everything for day clubs to night clubs, the red carpet and runways to a fashion forward glam look for a night out. Just be prepared to be noticed! The way they catch the light pretty much turns you into your own spotlight.
The most on trend way to wear chainmail dresses this year is the wider spaced mirror disc dresses vs the tighter knot chainmail dresses but both are still in style.

For a look that’s easy to pull off look for a tightly knit chainmail dress that isn’t sheer. Look for a backless styles, thigh slit or plunging neckline for a sexier look or go for a more fitted, less revealing style for a more modest glam goddess look.
Semi-sheer designs sit in the middle ground. They’re a bolder choice tan full coverage but easier to pull off than sheer styles but can look a little indecisive. I personally prefer going full tilt with this trend.
It doesn’t have to be silver or gold. There are lots of pretty colors to wear this trend from aquatic blues and greens to bright pinks.

What to wear under chainmail dresses
If you’re wondering what to wear under chainmail dresses without baring all there’s several options depending on how modest or sexy you want to go:
- Over a swimsuit or bikini.
- With nude boy shorts and a bralette.
- Over a bodysuit.
- For the daring, with boy briefs and nipple coverups.

This nude bikini is one of the best options I’ve seen as it’s seamless and strapless. It’s one of those sets I’d use as nude underwear under a lot of clothing.
A mirror disc dress is a great option for both the day and night. For the day style them over swimwear. Just be careful the metal doesn’t get too hot! Rock up in them and sip drinks in them but put them at the bottom of your bag to keep them cool while you’re soaking up the sun to avoid getting burned by the metal. For the night style them over boy shorts or full briefs and bra or bodysuit.

The chainmail and mirror disc dress edit
Whether you’re looking for an ultra sexy chainmail mini dress or more tightly knit chainmail, these are the slinky looks we’re loving right now. From designer to luxe for less under $50 there’s a style for everyone. I’ve also added the best nude set to wear underneath any of these chainmail dresses for full coverage everywhere you need it.
So be bold and don’t just wear them for a glam night out. Wear them on vacation for your most fabulous resort wear look yet. I ordered this gold maxi to wear to the day club in Croatia but it was too long for me, so if you’re tall snap this one up while it’s on sale as the quality’s fab. I’m going to order a mini instead. See you there, it’ll be hard to miss me!
