Fall weather can be unpredictable, so I almost always plan the layer at the same time as the dress. What you need for a September wedding can be completely different from an outdoor wedding in late October or November, especially depending on where you’re going.
For milder weather, a tailored blazer, wrap or lightweight trench can be enough. For colder ceremonies, look for a longer wool coat or another polished layer that covers enough of your dress to actually keep you warm. I also try to choose outerwear that feels intentional with the outfit rather than throwing a random black coat over everything at the last minute.
Even if you’ve chosen an outdoor fall wedding guest dress that’s warm, you’re more than likely going to need to layer up your wedding outfit with a light jacket, trench coat or blazer to stay warm.

Wedding guest dress etiquette is ever evolving and depends on the dress code, couple, venue, country and culture, so the invitation should always be your starting point. White, ivory and anything that could photograph as bridal are generally best avoided unless the couple specifically asks guests to wear them. Black is widely accepted at many U.S. weddings, although traditions and preferences vary elsewhere, including in the UK, so consider the setting and couple rather than assuming the same rules apply to every wedding.
You don’t need to avoid bright colors automatically either. If you’re worried a color is too bold or aren’t sure how formal to be, just ask the bride, mother of the bride or maid of honor. Most brides have a vision of what they want their wedding to look like. When I got married in England in the summer, I specifically asked my guests not to wear black on the wedding invitations as part of the dress code. It’s always easier when the couple gives you clear direction, but if in doubt, ask. No one wants to feel uncomfortable or upset the bride.
I’ve also spoken to a few mothers of the bride and groom, and their tip was to talk to each other beforehand to make sure you’re not wearing the same color or anything too similar. It’s also worth making sure your colors don’t clash, since you’ll be standing together in a lot of the photos.
