Stay warm & cozy this season in this timeless and elegant coat
Herringbone coats are such classic women’s outwear and there’s so many ways from edgy to classic chic style to style them. With this Winters fashion being more tailored, structured and chic I decided to update my outer wear and look for this timeless piece to add to my wardrobe. I love simple black jackets but there’s something more statement making and elegant about a women’s Herringbone coat. I’m also into white knee high boots right now which goes really well with black and white iterations of this pattern. Whether that’s a winter herringbone wool coat or lighter weight shorter jacket. Celebrities have been wearing this pattern for decades from Emily Ratajkowski to Victoria Beckham. So here’s the best herringbone coats for women I found and the one on my wish list for both fashion and function. Along with celebrity inspired ways to style herringbone coats. My only regret is not getting one sooner!

Are Herringbone coats in style
Yes herringbone coats are in style. They’re a timeless piece if you go for a more classic, fitted cut in traditional colors than something too trendy.
Herringbone coats do tend to be a little more expensive as they tend to be made from either 100% wool or a wool and cashmere blend. Which makes them perfect for a warm Fall or Winter jacket.
Which style of Herringbone coat should I get?
The style you get really depends on your personal style and what you’re planning on wearing it over for the most part. A relaxed single or double breasted coat works well over bulkier Winter wear like sweaters.
Whereas a more fitted piece works well over workwear, dresses, leggings, jeans and sleeker outfits. Belted wool and cashmere coats tend to work with pretty much everything.
What’s the difference between Herringbone, Chevron and Houndstooth?
No, there are subtle differences between Herringbone and Chevron and more distinct ones from Houndstooth. Although to be fair they both look really similar, especially from a distance.
The difference between Herringbone and Chevron is that although they’re both rectangles, the Herringbone pattern is rows of staggered V shaped lines which create a staggered zigzag pattern resembling the skeleton of a herring vs Chevron’s aligned zigzag pattern with diagonal cut at both of the short ends of the rectangle that meet to create a true V.
Houndstooth (like the jacket below) is a duo tone pattern that’s more of a square than rectangle and the shapes don’t interlock. They look more like a checkerboard or 4 pointed star than rectangles that form V’s.
Herringbone fabric tends to be wool, which is why it’s seen so often on both men and women’s coats and jackets.
The herringbone coat I’m eyeing this season
I tend to go for double breasted styles as I like the more formal look and structure of them to single breasted style. I also like belted looks to create more of a waistline and hourglass silhouette. So this Weekend Max Mara coat for under $700 is a steal.
I’m planning on styling it with white boots (as well as my black) which tend to look a little more trendy and less classic so I wanted a coat in the same color palette rather than a brown version. Just personal taste.
If I had the budget Saint Laurent’s coat would have been my top pick but this is a much more credit card friendly option and a great price for Weekend Max Mara!
Another even more budget friendly option is this oversized single breasted herringbone coat. I also love that this can be styled as a 3 piece set. The quality is great. It’s also pretty heavy weight.
The down side is that it runs very big. As you can see an XS drowned me but I’m 5’2″ and a 00/0. So if you’re taller or like a more oversize fit this might work for you. Either way, I’d recommend sizing down 1 size or 2 if you have a small frame.

These are the most chic and fabulous Herringbone coats for Fall Winter. I’ve mainly added longer length jackets but there’s a couple of shorter jackets and blazers too in case you want to layer pieces or were looking for something different.
There’s also both designer pieces including a Rag & Bone coat with 50% off and luxe for less more affordable styles under $200.
Italist also has lots of amazing sale finds including Red Valentino, Max Mara and Gucci if you’re looking for a shorter length coat. Use code RF-220X-D9218D at checkout to be entered to win $500.
Kenneth Cole has a really beautiful belted herringbone coat with a hidden zip front closure that looks really sleek and sharp. I’ve also added some more affordable pieces from Amazon and Forever 21 but can’t attest to the quality or how warm they’ll be. At least Amazon offers free shipping & returns if it doesn’t work out for you.
How to style womens Herringbone coats and jackets like a celebrity
Honestly, they go with pretty much anything except maybe a formal gown. Take some styling inspiration from these celebrities who seem to lean towards Saint Laurent for their coats. Styled with black leggings and black ankle boots but there are some variations:
- Chrissy Teigan styled her herringbone-print Saint Laurent coat with an all black outfit and ankle booties.
- Miranda Kerr styled her herringbone Saint Laurent coat with shiny black leggings, a grey sweater and black ankle boots.
- Emily Ratajkowski styled hers with a black top, light blue jeans and black ankle boots for a more casual but polished look.
- Victoria Beckham, a never ending source for chic fashion inspiration styled hers with the collar popped, black opaque tights and black stiletto court shoes.
- Cameron Diaz wore hers with wide leg black pants and nude stiletto pumps.
- Style it like the models as a 3 piece matching skirt, shorts or pants suit for a polished, put together look.
For the most part I’ll be styling mine with either all black or black and white outfits too and always with heels.
Eve xoxo
