Comfortable, travel friendly clothes for a chic arrival
Airport outfits really come down to artful layering and the right materials, and whether you’re going for chic or casual they should all be comfortable. You genuinely don’t have to limit yourself to sweatsuits and leggings, or cute summer dresses you’ll freeze in the moment you board. I’m fairly sure everyone can already put together a leggings, t-shirt and sneakers look, so what I wanted to share here are looks that actually inspire something a little different. These stylish airport outfits range from elevated loungewear to wide-leg trousers and blazers that are comfortable, wrinkle-resistant and easy to layer whether you’re flying in summer or winter.
Eve Dawes is a fashion editor and founder of Glamour and Gains magazine with over 15 years of styling experience. She has collaborated with Revolve and toured internationally as a professional dancer, giving her a firsthand understanding of how clothing performs on the body under real conditions. Every outfit recommendation in this article comes from personal long-term wear testing.

What to wear on a plane
I’ve rounded up the most stylish women’s airport travel outfits in the most crease-resistant materials (leave the linen at home for anything longer than a short hop), along with practical but genuinely fashionable shoes and accessories. There are also some dos and don’ts further down that both you and the people around you will appreciate. These are easy ways to upgrade your airport style for your next vacation or business trip without starting from scratch.
If you go for a jumpsuit, look for elasticated hems so they don’t drag on bathroom floors, and 3/4 or capped sleeves so they don’t trail into anything they shouldn’t. Pockets are always worth prioritizing. Layer over a tank or bodysuit with a light jacket and you’re ready for whatever temperature the plane or your destination throws at you.
I fly in blazer and shorts sets constantly for hot weather destinations. It looks polished at the gate and once I land I can just take the blazer off, so I’m not walking out of arrivals overdressed in 90 degree heat.

I have to feel brave traveling in white pants but I love them for a chic look and find them more comfortable than jeans and black just isn’t a color I wear much of in the Summer.

Airport travel outfits review haul
Summer airport outfits are genuinely harder to get right than any other season. You don’t want to freeze on the plane or step off somewhere warm already sweating. The easiest solution is a matching set built around a cami or tank rather than a sweatshirt, so you can layer up for the flight and strip back at the destination without having to change your whole outfit. A lightweight pashmina or scarf handles everything in between and takes up almost no space in your bag.
The other thing I always recommend, regardless of season, is keeping a change of clothes in your carry-on. If your checked bag goes missing (and it does happen) you’ll be grateful you have something to change into. A satin or luxe matching set that goes from the plane to dinner with a simple heel swap is honestly the most efficient way to travel.

These are a few of the cute matching sets I ordered from casual airport loungewear to a more dressy satin set that can also be dressed up and worn on vacation or business trips with heels.
What should I wear to the airport? Stylish womens travel outfit ideas
Some travel outfit dos and don’ts if you want to get through security hassle-free, stay comfortable for the duration, and not upset your fellow passengers in the process:
- Go as heavy as you like with deodorant, but be considerate with perfume. A confined pressurized cabin is not the place for a full fragrance application.
- Wear shoes you can get on and off quickly at security and run in if you need to make a connecting flight. Flip-flops are a major fail for traveling in.
- Look for materials and cuts that don’t crease badly after hours of sitting and sleeping. A lot of airport loungewear sets are genuinely more chic than a regular tracksuit now and far better on a long-haul flight than denim.
- Wear clothes you can layer easily because the plane temperatures are all over the place, the terminal is often cold, and your destination could be either.
- Avoid anything that drags on bathroom floors, whether that’s an over-long hem or a belted romper with ties that could end up somewhere you really don’t want to think about.
- Make sure you can get your outfit on and off in a plane bathroom without a struggle. You’ll appreciate this on a long flight, especially between connections.
- Crop length tops might make a cute airport outfit but longer length tops and dresses to avoid any awkward situations if you have to raise your arms in the body scanner.
- Avoid clothing with enough metal detailing to set off security. Chunky belts, heavy hardware and stacked jewelry all slow things down.
- Underwired bras are genuinely hit and miss with airport metal detectors, and they also have a habit of digging into the back of airplane seats on a long flight. For an easier time all round, a regular bra or a supportive sports bra is the better call.

What shoes are best to fly in
When I’m traveling for work I fly in sneakers or sneakerinas in case I need to run to catch a connecting flight, then change into slides or heels when I land depending on where I’m going and how much luggage I have. For anything that doesn’t have TSA PreCheck, the only real requirement is that shoes come on and off quickly and you can actually move in them. Chic designer flats, clean white sneakers and soft leather loafers are all strong choices that carry into the rest of the trip without feeling like airport shoes.

Cute Airport Outfits | Stylish Women’s Travel Outfits
These are the women’s travel outfit ideas I come back to because they’re comfortable without ever looking like you gave up. I’ve deliberately left denim out because I find it really uncomfortable to fly in for any length of time, and I’ve avoided anything too tight as well. Sitting in restrictive clothing for hours increases the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis and is just not worth it.

1. Add a blazer to your matching set or loungewear.
Layer your airport loungewear over a tank, finish with a blazer and a scarf you can remove in stages and you’re covered for almost any climate. Think chic loungewear in soft materials rather than mismatched pieces that have seen better days. A designer scarf elevates any travel outfit and doubles as a blanket on the plane. Fresh white sneakers complete this look for airports with a lot of walking.

2. Airport Loungewear Co-Ord Set | Pants and Long Line Cardigan
A longline cardi thrown over a matching set, tank or tee and joggers is one of the easiest ways to look laid-back and put together at the same time. It’s easier to get on and off than a sweatshirt when you’re trying not to flatten your hair, and folds into a carry-on without any bulk. Just avoid too wide a leg pant so you’re not tripping over yourself if you need to run for a gate.
3. Wide-leg pants, a soft tee and a blazer or leather jacket.
I love a blazer for city breaks and throwing over a summer dress, but if I’m heading somewhere cooler or wetter the leather jacket takes over every time.
4. Chic matching set
A loose-fitting, well-cut matching set looks polished and flies comfortably. Roll up the sleeves if they bother you, or have a tailor convert them to cap sleeves.

5. Oversized blazer, tank top and leggings
The fitted under layers balance out the oversized blazer so that it doesn’t look like a sloppy airport outfit. I’m recommending tank tops over bodysuits for flying for the sake of easier bathroom runs. This blazer and pants set is right on trend with its split hem pants and can be used on your trip not just for the plane.
6. High waisted trousers with a super soft t-shirt and colorful or patterned blazer or scarf.
This is great for layering with a Summer plane outfit. Break up the monochromatic look with either some color or a designer print for a chic, luxe women’s travel outfit. Perfect for city breaks or going straight to business meetings. Just throw some heels and red lippy in your carry on for a quick change.
7. Jumpsuits
Ok, so there’s pros and cons to wearing jumpsuits flying. Pros: they make cute airport outfits that look stylish and are so comfortable. Cons: a little more tricky going to the bathroom (roll or pull them up so they don’t drag on the floor). Look for ones that don’t have lots of buttons or that you need help getting in and out of. PS The grey cargo jumpsuit I’m wearing is super thick and cozy so better for cooler destinations. The pants are cuffed which means no issues dragging them on the bathroom floors!

8. A belted coat over joggers and a t-shirt or button down shirt
These are great if you’re headed to cooler climates or traveling for work. If you tend to run hot, swap out the joggers for bike shorts. Here’s a round up of the best womens winter coats to layer over your look for a cozy and comfy airport outfit.
Complete Your Women’s Airport Outfit
Shoes, bags & accessories really finish airport outfits and pull it altogether. Whether you’re going for a chic or cute airport outfit, these shoes are perfect to complete your travel outfit.
Think chic designer flats, fresh white sneakers and soft leather espadrilles that are comfortable, stylish and can be worn with lots of your other vacation or work outfits.
The best travel totes for your trip
An oversized carryall that fits a change of clothes and any layers you’ve pulled off is as essential as a boarding pass. Plus it can make or break a stylish airport outfit. My two non-negotiables for a carry-on bag are a top zipper so nothing falls out when you stow it overhead and pickpockets can’t get in, and internal sections so you can actually find your passport and boarding pass without emptying the whole thing at security.

I also use the Chanel Deauville tote as both carry-on and beach bag so I’m not managing two large bags from the moment I land.
Stay Warm On The Flight

Don’t underestimate a lightweight blanket, or if you want to keep things stylish, a pashmina or scarf that folds flat. Even in first class it’s genuinely more hygienic to have your own, and it works hard at your destination too as a scarf in cooler weather, a beach cover-up or an evening wrap somewhere warm.

Cute Airport Outfits FAQ
Stretch fabrics, modal, soft jersey and wrinkle-resistant synthetics are the best choices for airport travel. They don’t crease badly after hours of sitting, move comfortably through security and handle the temperature swings between a hot terminal and a cold cabin. Avoid stiff denim and pure linen for anything longer than a short flight.
In summer, a matching set built around a cami or tank layered under a lightweight blazer or cardigan is the most versatile airport outfit you can put together. You stay cool on the ground and can add layers for the air-conditioned cabin. A pashmina doubles as an in-flight blanket and an evening wrap at the destination.
Wide-leg pants are one of the best airport outfit choices because they’re comfortable, stylish and easy to layer. Make sure the hem is well-fitted so you’re not tripping running between connections, and choose a stretch or soft woven fabric rather than stiff denim.
The best airport shoes come on and off quickly at security and can be run in if needed. Slip-on sneakers, clean leather loafers and cushioned flats are all strong choices. Save heels and slides for when you land.
The best carry-on bag has a top zipper and internal sections. An oversized tote or structured carryall that fits a change of clothes, spare layers and your essentials is ideal. A designer tote like the Chanel Deauville works as both carry-on and beach bag so you don’t need two large bags at the destination.
