Sweater dresses are one of those fall and winter wardrobe staples I come back to every year. They’re cozy, easy to style and can work for everything from running errands to work, dinner and holiday parties depending on the knit, length and how you accessorize them. They’re also one of my favorite things to wear with ankle boots, knee-high boots or over-the-knee boots once the temperatures drop.
Sweater dresses are still in style for 2026, but it’s the silhouettes, colors and styling that make them feel current. This season I’m seeing everything from fitted ribbed and cardigan dresses to chunky knits, oversized sweater dresses, off-the-shoulder styles and longer midi and maxi lengths. Rich brown, burgundy, red and jewel tones are especially easy ways to make a knit dress feel more current without buying something you’ll only wear for one season.
I own and wear a lot of sweater dresses, so this isn’t just a roundup of styles I’ve found online. Sweater dresses are one of the easiest pieces to wear throughout fall and winter because you can completely change the look with your shoes, outerwear and accessories. I tend to wear mine with everything from ankle boots and knee-high boots to pumps and sneakers, depending on the length and where I’m going.
For 2026, I’m especially drawn to rich browns, burgundy, red, cream and classic black, as well as fitted ribbed styles, cardigan dresses, off-the-shoulder silhouettes and oversized sweater dresses. I still love neutrals because they’re easy to rewear and style in different ways, but a colorful knit dress is such an easy way to brighten up a winter wardrobe.
When I’m shopping for sweater dresses, I also pay attention to the weight of the knit. I get cold easily outside but tend to overheat indoors, so I personally find lighter and medium-weight knits more versatile than really heavy styles. They’re easier to layer under a blazer or coat without feeling bulky and I can actually keep them on once I’m inside. I also love button-down sweater dresses when I need to change after work because they’re much easier to get on without messing up my hair and makeup than pulling a turtleneck or roll neck over my head.

I love sleeveless and short-sleeve sweater dresses for fall because they’re some of the easiest styles to layer. I can throw on a leather or denim jacket and flat boots for a casual look, or add a belt and heeled boots to dress them up. They’re also a good option if, like me, you tend to overheat in restaurants and other heated spaces once you’re wearing a heavier knit and a jacket.
Sleeveless knit dresses don’t have to mean basic neutrals either. Look for interesting details like cutouts, backless designs and asymmetric necklines, as well as richer fall colors like burgundy and other jewel tones which are trending. Long-sleeve sweater dresses are my go-to once the temperatures really start to drop. They’re easy to wear with tights and knee-high boots for colder days, but I personally tend to prefer lighter-weight knits that I can layer rather than really bulky styles. I get cold easily outside but can overheat once I’m indoors, so I want something cozy without ending up looking cute but feeling sweaty!
For 2026, some of the long-sleeve sweater dress styles I’m seeing and wearing most are fitted ribbed dresses, cardigan dresses and chunkier cable knits. Details like statement buttons, pearls and crystals can also make a classic knit feel much more interesting.
Color is another easy way to update the look. Along with timeless black, cream and other neutrals, I’m loving richer shades like burgundy, red, brown and jewel tones for fall and winter.
Some of my favorite long sleeve sweaters this season are this royal blue Lovers + Friends balloon sleeve, turtleneck sweater dress which I fell in love with as it makes a change from black and goes with my white boots. It’s also not too thick and bulky and the flared sleeves make it a bit different. It runs short but otherwise I find it runs true to size.

You can never go wrong with a black turtleneck sweater dress for a classic fall or winter look. This particular one has a sexy mini leg slit and does run short, so I tend to wear it with leggings or tights when I want a little more coverage. I also added a belt to break up the solid black and create more shape.
Best off-the-shoulder sweater dresses
Off-the-shoulder sweater dresses are one of my favorite ways to make knitwear feel a little sexier while still staying warm. They work especially well for date nights and evenings when you want something cozier than a regular dress but more dressed up than an everyday knit.
I tend to prefer shorter sweater dresses for daytime as they’re easy to wear with bare legs earlier in fall, then tights or leggings once it gets colder. This particular style runs really short, which makes it a great option for petites. I’m 5’2″ and wear it as a dress, but if you’re over around 5’5″, I’d probably style it as a sweater rather than a mini dress.

I’m a fan of belts as I think they finish a look and create a better silhouette. Especially with tight ribbed styles as they can be hard to pull off and show every bump. A wide belt covers a little bit and distracts, or works if I’m trying to create shape with an oversized style.

My first rule is to get dressed before doing my hair and makeup whenever possible. I love turtleneck and high neck styles especially for when my tans fading off and the ultra cold weather. A little trick for preventing your foundation and powder from transferring onto your turtle neck is to spray your neck or dress with a little non-sticky hairspray. It works better than setting spray for preventing your turtleneck from wearing more of your makeup than you are!

At 5’2″, sweater dress length is one of the first things I look at. Mini sweater dresses often work particularly well for me because styles that can feel very short on taller women tend to hit at a much more wearable length on my frame. I also like fitted midi sweater dresses because they create a longer line without overwhelming me with fabric. With oversized sweater dresses, I normally add a belt or choose a shorter length so I don’t lose my shape.
